Happy Friday from Literacy Connexus! Thank you all for taking a little time out of your day to visit. We hope that everyone is in good faith and good health this lovely Friday.
Today, I’ll keep it short and sweet. I want to talk about gifts. No, it isn’t Christmas yet (although boy is this year flying by!). I want to talk about the other kind of gift. Not the scarves, and the books, and the coffee mugs (soo soo many coffee mugs), but the gifts the good Lord blessed us with.
For some that may be the ability to connect with any and everyone you meet, others may have a knack for language, some a love for education, and for others still their gift may simply be an unshakeable faith and calling to help.
Caroline doesn’t let retirement make her life boring. She’s putting her old gifts to new use.
As a retired teacher, Caroline uses her free time and education skills to volunteer weekly with “Ready for School,” a free pre-K program for newly arrived refugee families. She teaches parents about the American education system and introduces young students to numbers, colors, and the English Language.
As for me, I’d say that my gift is a love for languages. In college I studied Spanish, and French, and Linguistics. You may be able to tell, from my frequent lengthy rambling, but I love a good word. In all of my language learning adventures I took note of where I struggled, what worked, and what absolutely didn’t work for me and I use those lessons to put myself in my students shoes. I know what it feels like to try to learn a language as an adult, and I know what it feels like to feel lost in a conversation because of a language barrier. I also know a few tips and tricks to overcome those obstacles and I can pass them on to my students and the people in my community through ESL.
What skills or knowledge have you been gifted with? How can you put these skills to use in your community? Let us know in this short poll.
