BOO! Good morning and hello from Literacy Connexus! We hope that this blog finds you healthy, happy, and delightedly haunted just in time for Halloween this year. We took a bit of an unexpected break last week, but this week we’re back and we brought Halloween lesson plan ideas with us!
Check out this awesome blog post from Teaching Cove that includes 5 thrilling lesson plan ideas just in time for spooky season!
One of my favorite lesson plan ideas from this post is Halloween Around the World – where you show students Halloween traditions around the world. Students can research the history of the holiday, or you can all do it together as a class. It’s also a fantastic time to discuss the differences and similarities between the students own holiday traditions, and have students use their English skills to describe different pictures, discuss videos, and converse with their peers.
Another idea that I enjoyed was the Ghosts of the Past, Present, and Future – use those spooky stories to get students to practice their verb tenses – it’s brilliant!
Aside from the wonderful ideas from Teaching Cove, another activity I like to do during spooky season is to discuss superstitions. What is a superstition? Are you superstitious? What superstitions have you heard of? And superstitions around the world. My students always get a kick out of discussing different superstitions around the world and talking about their own cultural superstitions. It’s a great learning experience for the whole class – myself included!
Do you add holidays into your lesson plans? Which of these ideas would you try in your classroom? Let us know!
As always, blessings and happy teaching!
