Are you interesting in helping others learn English as a second language?

Good Morning and Happy Monday everyone! As some of you may know, Literacy Connexus held a symposium this past weekend on responding to refugee through ESL and other church ministries. If you missed our symposium, don’t fret, because we will be sharing videos, resources, and information from the symposium here on the blog for all to see!

With the increased influx of refugees that we are expecting this year, we have a wonderful opportunity to reach them through teaching English. So, where do you start? We would like to share the first steps to take when establishing an ESL ministry, so that anyone can get started serving their community if ESL is in their heart. We have put together 17 steps for establishing a successful ministry.

In a nutshell, in order to start a successful ESL ministry you should:

  1. Pray
  2. Identify Needs and Research Area Resources
  3. Consult with Pastor and Staff
  4. Seek Prayer Support
  5. Announce Ministry and Select a Director
  6. Make Initial Decisions and Determine a Budget
  7. Select the Curriculum and Begin a Resource Closet
  8. Enlist Workers
  9. Convene for the First All Workers Meeting
  10. Use Literacy Connexus Resources
  11. Train Your Teachers
  12. Publicize Your Ministry and Enlist Students
  13. Have a Follow Up Workers Meeting
